The most important function of nucleosides is that they are components of the nucleic acids. The latter represent the blue print of organisms and determine the biochemical processes and the ability to reproduce [1,2]. Nucleosides are composed of a heterocyclic nitrogenous base linked typically to a pentose via a beta-N-glycosidic bond. The nucleoside bases are derivatives of purine, commonly adenine and guanine, and pyrimidine, commonly cytosine, thymine, and uracil. The pentose moiety is ribose in ribonucleosides, and deoxyribose in deoxyribonucleosides. Nucleotides are nucleoside derivatives in which pentose is phosphorylated, usually at the 5′-hydroxyl group [1,2]. Figure 1 shows structures of common nucleosides which are the components of nucleic acids and thus are the basis of the genetic system.
