The debate about the date of the first humans to enter North America has raged for over 100 years - in particular, the quest to find the earliest datable to Pre-Clovis site has brought up a number of contenders with sound radiocarbon stratigraphies. The chronological relationship between Clovis culture and the demise of the megafauna has also been vigorously debated. This paper will demonstrate that these questions may not be answerable by radiocarbon dating alone, in the light of the recently available programs extending calibration back to the Late Glacial. This could, of course, explain why the problem has never been satisfactorily resolved.
