This is a timely book about the rise of anti-immigrant sentiment and related legislation emerging across the United States in the contexts of places that have experienced significant economic decline and demographic change. With a focus on one city, Hazelton, and the application of mixed methods to illuminate past and present contentious political economies, Longazel takes an unabashed liberation sociology approach.Nestled in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania and 2000 miles from the US–Mexico border, Hazleton gained US national media prominence when its city council passed the Illegal Immigration Relief Act (IIRA) in 2006. Its notoriety set off a cascade of similar such legislative acts in more than 100 municipalities across the United States.
