Fine particles of some metals up to 100 A in size were examined at the level of the atomic resolution by an electron microscope equipped with a TV monitor system. As the size of the particles decreases to below 50 A the particle shapes were found to change continually through the internal transformation from a single crystal to a twinned crystal, including multiply-twinned crystals, and vice versa. The transformation, taking place in a cooperative motion of both internal and external atoms, occurs abruptly in less than a fraction of a second. The structural fluctuation of small clusters seems to be associated with electronic excitations due to irradiation of the electron beam.
