For renewable and sustainable energy, developing cut-price and high-efficiency electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline water electrolysis is of paramount importance. We herein report a compound electrocatalyst comprised of nickel-vanadium sesquioxide nanoparticles assembled porous microspheres on nickel foam (Ni-V 2 O 3 /NF). The achieved composite exhibits superior electrocatalytic performance towards HER, more outstanding than the commercial Pt/C catalyst in the light of nearly zero onset overpotential, an extremely low overpotential of 25 mV to obtain a current density of -10 mA cm -2 , a Tafel slope of 58 mV dec -1 and a good durability for 24 h in 1.0 M KOH. Theoratical calculation reveals that the presence of V 2 O 3 can optimize the electronic structures of active Ni components and continuously accelerate the dissociation of water molecules, which improves the HER kinetics synergistically. The present work will advance the development of highly efficient nanocomposite electrocatalysts for alkaline water electrocatalysis.
