During the past 10-15 years a range of new desorption tech-niques has become available for use in mass spectrometry. 1 These techniques include plasma desorption (PD), 2 field desorption (FD), 3 and fast atom bombardment (FAB). 4With desorption methods it has almost become a routine matter to producebeams of molecule-ions of compounds previously not accessible to mass spectrometric analysis due to low volatility. Often the desorption techniques are “soft” methods for ionization. This is to say that relatively little energy is transferred to the molecules, so the molecule-ions produce relatively few fragment ions. For the mass spectroscopist this can be an advantage, because a strong signal for a molecule-ion provides important molecular weight infor-f University of Oslo. 1 University of Warwick.
