The purpose of the present study was to re-examine a population, which 30 years earlier had been studied in great detail with respect to psychiatric morbidity. Between 1939 and 1944 Johan Bremer was the public health officer of Berlevig. By March 31, 1944, he had studied the psychiatric as well as the somatic health of the population. Having a good personal knowledge of the community, Bremer was able to make a careful study of the psychological, social and genetic aspects of psychiatric disorders of all the inhabitants, 680 men and 645 women. Twenty per cent of the population had been given psychiatric diagnoses [Bremer (1951)].Between 1972 and 1976 the population of Berlevig was re-examined. Clinical interviews were carried out by three psychiatrists, Egil Bjarnar, Harald Reppesgaard and Christian Astrup, who also offered the population treatment. The three psychiatrists worked for four months during the summers 1972-1974. In addition one of them (Astrup) travelled monthly to Berlevig du-ring the project period. Samples of the population were studied with a questionnaire [Leighton et al.(1963)],
