Farmers' adoption of existing, improved techniques is a central challenge in Sub-Saharan Africa. Extension agents (EAs) are commonly used to disseminate agricultural techniques and technologies. There is no evidence on what activities and incentive mechanisms can make extension services work for farmers. Within an existing extension network in Mozambique, we compare di usion of sustainable land management (SLM) practices in the classic training and visit (TV and (2) a contact farmer (CF) in each community. Yet, the structure of the extension network implemented by the project does not necessarily guarantee a ow of information from CFs to farmers. The GoM worked with a team of researchers from the World Bank and IFPRI to use the MSDVP as a learning vehicle and set up a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) to test the e ectiveness of providing a centralized, direct training and performance-based incentives to CFs in boosting farmers' adoption of sustainable land practices (SLM). The design of the evaluation consists of 3 overlaid treatment arms: (1) the revised TV (2) additional women are designated to receive direct SLM training; and (3) additional performance-based incentives for CFs. The various treatment arms were randomly assigned at the village level (150 treatment, 50 control), using a strati ed procedure at the district level. The report focuses on treatment 1 and comments on the challenges in implementing treatment 3.
