The photometabolism of 3.alpha.-3H-7-dehydrocholesterol in skin was studied in groups of rats exposed to UV irradiation. The major photolytic product was identified as previtamin D3 by its identical migration with authentic previtamin D3 on high-pressure liquid chromatography. This photometabolite was isolated in pure form from endogenous precursors in skins of rats exposed to UV irradiation; identification as previtamin D3 was based on its UV absorption spectrum, mass spectrum and thermal conversion to vitamin D3.
