Crises represent a special challenge for coaching due to the associated existential threat and the strain on the client. Such periods can create a complex stress situation for the client, which according to Kaluza (Stressbewältigung. Trainingsmanual zur psychologischen Gesundheitsförderung. Springer, 2015) has effects at several levels. On the physiological level, there are effects on stress hormones, heart rate, blood pressure, and sleep quality, as well as impaired cognitive functions such as attention and memory problems. On the cognitive-emotional level, feelings such as fear, helplessness, guilt, and shame are particularly relevant. At the instrumental level, the focus is on the impairment of solution-oriented action, especially self-management. Coaching in crises should consider these particularities, for example, by first focusing on defusing the situation while the client is in a very tense state. Next, interventions addressing all three fundamental levels should follow: promoting stress management, emotional skills, and constructive thinking, as well as self-management and problem solving. A balance of problem-related and fundamental interventions can promote crisis management and its future prevention.
