For the routine screening of cord blood for congenital hypothyroidism our laboratory measures thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) I by enzyme immunoassay using the Boehringer Mannheim (BM) ES700 analyser. A cut off level of 30 mIU/L is used for deciding which samples need free thyroxine (FT4) measurement. All abnormal results are checked as soon as possible by measuring both TSH and FT4 on a fresh blood sample. Nearly 9000 cases are screened annually.
