A Signal processor with a capacious memory for Phase-Doppler Anemometry (PDA) has been developed to measure intermittent spray flows. The software signal processor which consists of high speed A/D converters, large memories and computers makes the system versatile to measure velocity, size, particle flux of droplets simultaneously and evaluating the results and their correlations. In most case, a certain amount of memory provides a satisfactory information for the measurement of one injection of sprays. Several types of triggering (burst detection) were examined and discussed to improve the performance of the processor for noisy signals. A measurement of a dense mist flow by a supersonic humidifier showed the data rate of over 10 particles per millisecond. Sizing and velocity measurements are carried out for a flow field of a fuel injector of IC engines using a dummy fuel as an example of intermittent spray flows. The measured results were in accordance with the simultaneously visualized flow patterns by laser plane sheet.
