Selection for scutellar bristle number in lines of segregating for scute, by choosing scute males with high numbers as sires, raised the number of bristles in scute flies to 4 and the number of bristles in wild type sibs to 6 in extreme cases. A method of estimating the relative genetic change required to bring about different bristle changes is described. It is suggested that to move from 3 bristles to 5 takes 8 times the genetic change that it does to move from 2 bristles to 3. Bearings of the findings on canalization and non-additive genetic variation are discussed.
