Photolysis of dodecamethylcyclohexasilane is an excellent way to generate dimethylsilylene and has been used with success for insertions into heteropolar single bonds. A useful example is the production of dimethylchlorosilane by the photolysis of dodecamethylcyclohexasilane in the presence of dry hydrogen chloride [M. Ishikawa and M. Kumada, Chem. Commun.(1971), p. 507]. 11. HL Carrell and J. Donohue, Acta Cryst. B28, 1566 (1972). The equatorial Si-C distances are equivalent averaging1. 935±0.004 A, whereas the axial Si-C distances are equivalent at 1.913±0.004 A. These differences are not certainly significant and, if real, may result from crystal packing effects.
