Thirteen patients demonstrating clicking of 21 temporomandibular joints were investigated using cineradiography. The condylar movement pattern including clicking phases was studied during mandibular opening and closing. Prior to clicking retarded movement was often present. In combination with clicking the condylar velocity was increased as was the distance between the mandibular condyle and the temporal component. In clicking patients the right and left condylar movements were unsynchronized. The control material of 20 joints in individuals without subjective or objective signs of symptoms from the temporomandibular joints or masticatory muscles presented even condylar paths. Left and right condylar movements were also synchronized having equal velocity.
