This volume contains the proceedings of the international meeting on “Geometry and Topology of Submanifolds” which was held at Avignon, France, from May 30 till June 3, 1988. The goals aimed at during this meeting were similar as during the previous meeting which was held at Luminy, France, in 1987, and of which the proceedings were also published by World Scientific. In particular, we try to have some balanced mixture of some well established mathematicians in our fields with some younger mathematicians who are starting their research in differential geometry, to participate at our meetings, and to give reports there on some of the recent results of their work on pure or applied submanifold theory.On behalf of the scientific organisers, I would like to thank all participants for their contribution to our meeting at Avignon. Moreover, on behalf of all participants, I would like to thank the local mathematicians of Avignon for their help in caring for the practical organisation, and in particular also thank Madame Lefèvre, the local secretary, for her splendid work in this respect. Many special thanks are also due to our colleagues JM Morvan, M. Boyom and G. Zafindratafa, who, with their proverbial kindness and generosity, garan-teed the smooth (even analytic) running of this meeting. Finally, once more we thank the World Scientific Publishing Co for publishing these proceedings, and both for the very friendly and efficient way in which this was done.
