As little information about the lipid content of Phaeophycea is available, this preliminary study was carried out to determine lipid content, lipid classes and fatty acid patterns in 3 major kelp species, namely Laminaria pallida, Ecklonia maxima znaMacrocystis angustifolia, found off the west coast of South Africa. The lipid content of kelp was found to be low, ranging from 0.4% to 0.7% fresh weight. Fatty acid patterns were determined, thus enabling the contribution of the kelp plants to surface slicks and sea foams commonly found in the vicinity of kelp beds to be quantified. Comparisons of the fatty acid patterns in the kelps and the brown algae of the family Fucoidea were made. Using standing crop and productivity data of previous studies, the production of fat by fronds of Laminaria and Ecklonia was determined from a 499 χ l m transect running normal to the coast and extending from the shoreline to the end of the kelp bed. Instantaneous standing crop of fat was calculated to be in the region of 19.5 kg. Total fat released per day was estimated as 109.09 g or 0.22 g fat m^-day" in the period February to May.
