This review of interactions between macrotermitine Isoptera and fungi in the genusTermitomycesincludes a table showing the 14 fungal species known to be involved, together with the many species of termites associated with them (including species ofOdontotermes, MacrotermesandMicrotermes). The mutualistic relationship between these termites and fungi is multifaceted, but is largely based on their complementary enzyme and adaptive reproductive systems. The termites forage on dead plant material, which is passed rapidly and relatively unchanged through the gut and their faecal deposits to construct fungus combs.Termitomycesmycelium grows on the comb and degrades lignin and cellulose. The food is further degraded by enzymes in the termites' guts. Transmission is achieved by winged reproductive termites which ingest asexual spores from the fungus combs before they fly from the parent colonies.
