research, to describe different theoretical positions and to provide an insight into different methods of research design and analysis. Part One clearly illustrates a range of theoretical underpinnings of research. As a fairly novice post-graduate researcher, I found the explanation of ontology, epistemology, methodology and methods in Chapter three particularly useful. The basic principles and practices in conducting research are examined in Part Two and Part Three tackles key research methods in three subsections. Chapters discuss the advantages and challenges of engaging in different research designs using relevant and interesting educational research examples. Data collection tools are then examined with good reference to ethical considerations. The final 14 chapters summarise and explain different ways to analyse qualitative and quantitative data. The contributors each give an overview of when and how to use different analysis methods and although these chapters are probably not detailed enough to walk the reader through a complete data analysis, there are recommendations for further reading at the end of each chapter. To conclude, I feel that this book should be on the bookshelf of anyone engaging in post-graduate research in education. Both trainee educational psychologists and qualified psychologists commencing the continuing professional doctorate will benefit from reading this book as a starting point to planning and designing their research project.
