Most of the terms used in detailed studies of grassland plants are botanical and clearly defined, but some useful terms have appeared in the literature without any strict definition. Confusion has arisen because some terms have acquired several meanings (e, g, herbage), some concepts have several names (eg heading, ear emergence, inflorescence emergence) and some are used incorrectly even though their true meanings are established (eg leaf tor lamina). The purpose of this paper is to describe areas of imprecise or inaccurate usage and to propose definitions which will clarify the meanings of and the distinction between commonly used terms. The definitions have been arrived at after consultation with many colleagues in the British Isles and Commonwealth, No new terms have been coined, although some recently introduced ones from Hodgson (1979) have been included; rather, I have tried to make existing terms more precise. Terms whose use is recommended are printed in bold type where they are first defined, and are brought together in an alphabetical index and glossary at the end.
