It is known that organophosphorus compounds are hydrolysed by mammalian sera, but the specificity of the enzymes producing hydrolysis is rather complex and not yet fully understood. AUGUSTINSSON AND HEIMBORGER 1 have shown that tabun and DFP are hydrolysed by the same enzyme in rabbit plasma, while paraoxon, besides being split by this enzyme, is also split by another one, which in turn does not hydrolyse tabun and DFP 2. BEAKER AND BARBARO 3 have shown, that, in rabbit plasma, paraoxon is hydrolysed by a different enzyme than p-nitrophenyl-ethyl-npropylphosphonate and p-nitrophenyl-ethyl-n-pentylphosphonate. The enzyme hydrolysing paraoxon in rabbit, rat and horse serum was shown to be identical with an arylesterase 4. MAIN 5 has partially purified the enzyme hydrolysing paraoxon in sheep serum, and has shown that it hydrolyses tabun, but not tetraethylpyro-Abbreviations: Paraoxon, diethyl-p-nitrophenylphosphate; armine, ethyl-p-nitrophenylethylphosphonate; tabun, dimethylamido-ethoxy-phosphorylcyanide; DFP, diisopropyl-phosphorofluoridate.
