The spreading dynamics of a silicone oil (PDMS) drop in contact with the vapor of a solvent (hexane, cyclohexane, decaline) were studied. The observed behaviors are completely different from the ones that are expected and indeed observed in ideal systems. First, the contamination induces a surface tension gradient which may counteract or accelerate the spreading, depending on its direction. In a second stage, the surface of the drop becomes more homogeneous and the drop may either resume spreading or retract, again depending on the surface tension of the solvent.
