The ocular hypotensive properties of the beta-adrenergic blocking agents have been recognized since 1967, when it was noted that oral propranolol decreased the intraocular pressure. 1 Subsequent studies showed similar agents, such as oxprenolol, 2pindolol, 3atenolol, 4_6andpractolol7to be effective in decreasing intraocular pressure when administered either systemically or topically. Some of these drugs, however, have been associated with severe adverse side effects. 8-14 Timolol maleate, another beta-ad renergic blocking drug, has shown im pressive ocular hypotensive effects with out significant ocular or systemic side effects. 15-21 Timolol decreased intraocular pressure both in normotensive patients15 and, as compared to a placebo, 17'18 in patients with open-angle glaucoma. Short-term studies18 have demonstrated that 0.5% timolol solution is at the peak of the dose-response curve. At this concen tration, ocular hypotensive effects were noted for 24 hours or longer.
