Although infections caused by human immunodeficiency virus currently occupy the “viral spotlight,” genital infections caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV) continue to occur in epidemic proportions. After initial infection with HSV, the illness is lifelong, and recurrences may be frequent with attendant substantial morbidity. The in-creased incidence of genital herpetic infec-tions among women also is reflected in an increased incidence of neonatal herpetic infections." The recognition of genital and neonatal infections caused by HSV has become especially relevant since the de-velopment of effective antiviral agents. Women with genital herpes who are preg-nant or planning to become pregnant need to be identified to facilitate the development of a prudent management strategy." This chapter will focus on the microbiology, epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and management of genital HSV infections in women, including those who are pregnant.
