Andy, a 17-year-old “parachute kid” from Taiwan, was sent to live with his aunt and uncle in California 3 years ago, aft er his poor academic performance failed to improve. While he initially made friends with some other students in his high school that were in similar situations, he became more socially withdrawn in recent months. He also began to experience confl ict with his uncle, who was strict about his grades. Andy struggled to keep up with his homework, especially English. He tried talking to his parents about how he felt, only to be scolded by them for being ungrateful. Aft er turning in a writing assignment that hinted at his feelings of loneliness and despair, Andy was referred to see a school counselor.
