Observations were made on chick heart fibroblasts in liquid medium cultures in an attempt to analyze statistically the mutual effects of each on the other''s movement. Their speed of movement is analyzed by means of enlarged stills taken from films of the cultures. Analysis shows that (a) there is a significant inverse relationship between the speed of movement of a cell and the numbers of cells with which it was in contact during the observed movement; (b) a momentary increase of speed is correlated with the act of gaining and of losing a contact with another cell. The possibility of the 1st relationship being confounded with various other variable factors such as age in culture, density of surrounding cell population, or distance of the cell from the explant is considered. Though under certain conditions these factors may have an effect on the speed of the cell, when their effect is removed the relationship between speed and number of contacts remains. It is suggested that the phenomena descr. may be, in the main, due to the effects of adhesions between the cells.
