Within the last decade there has been a virtual renaissance in the comparative study of vertebrate visual anatomy. In the wake of this new knowledge, neurophysiological and behavioral studies of several mammalian species have rapidly expanded our comparative perspectives on neocortex and subcortical visual mechanisms in behavior. However, comparable study of non-mammals has not kept pace with the flow of new anatomical data. Our insights into visual mechanisms in other vertebrates are still based upon relatively few recordings and brain-lesion studies involving gold-fish, frogs and pigeons. Of these groups, the anuran amphibians (frogs and toads) have provided the most data; these are already sufficient to tax the scholarship of a reviewer.
