By enumeration of the spermatogonia (types A, intermediate, and B) present at each of the 14 stages of the cylce of the seminiferous epithelium of the rat, the pattern of renewal of the spermatogonia was revealed. Spermatogonial mitoses occurring early in the cycle (stage I) give rise to special spermatogonia of type A, which here are designated "dormant" since they do not divide during the 1st 8 stages of the cycle. At stage IX, each dormant cell gives rise to 2 type A spermatogonia which in turn divide, although not simultaneously. Of the 4 cells which have arisen from these divisions by the beginning (stage I) of the next cycle, 1 again, remains as a dormant type A spermatogonium which will eventually provide the cells of the next generation; the 3 others divide immediately to produce 6 type A cells, which gradually transform into intermediate type cells. By stage IV, these divide to produce 12 type B spermatogonia, which at stage VI divide to give rise to 24 young spermatocytes. In rats and other spp. as well, this process, that is the periodic appearance of a dormant spermatogonium while other spermatogonia divide to produce spermatocytes, is descr. as the Stem Cell Renewal Theory. This process allows for the cyclic formation of spermatocytes as well as the maintenance of the spermatogonial population.
