This paper presents a brief description of the effects produced by corrosion in a reinforced concrete structure. Taking into account these effects, an approach is developed for evaluating their effects upon structural performance of a damaged element. In order to do this the following aspects are studied: a) an evaluation of the corrosion attack penetration; b) a study of the relationship between attack penetration and cracking of concrete cover; c) an evaluation of reduction in bond strength due to corrosion processes; and d) application of models for assessing the load carrying capacity of reinforced concrete elements damaged by corrosion. These points are briefly described in the paper, and experimental data are presented on some aspects of the above mentioned steps. The evaluation of the corrosion attack penetration can be carried out by means of equipment developed under Eureka project EU-401. The other three steps are being developed in Brite/Euram project BE-4062. For the covering abstract see IRRD 867793.
