Viewing a painting. exploring a museum. is traditionally seen as an intensely personal and unique event. an event which is seldom ever totally repeated within the viewer's own life. How. then. can a museum educator possibly conceive of programs which will support and deepen the experience of a wide public. when each individual. alone. finds meaning within the museum in an intensely personal way'?Faced with the vast ambiguities of this task. most art museums resort to treating their visitors with either benign neglect or educational pain killers. For the museum sophisticate. the two remedies do not pose a significant problem: benign neglect is perhaps what he desires most as he wanders through the art museum's halls and galleries: and lecture tours. ear phone terminals. and wayside gift shops can be averted by artful dodging. However. for the remainder ofthe museum visitors. the task is more problematic than running interference among prepackaged tours. The question remains: given the variety of museum visitors. is homogenized treatment warranted. justified. and successful'?
