Conditions are derived for the break‐up of a finite amplitude Alfven wave into upper and lower sideband waves and a longitudinal disturbance. This instability can occur over a much wider range of conditions than the decay instability. The longitudinal disturbance is only nonoscillatory when dissipation is neglected.
