Before settlement, the ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forests of the US Southwest were much more open and parklike than today. Post-settlement increases in tree density have contributed to changes not only in ecological patterns and processes, but also in timber, forage, water, wildlife and aesthetic conditions. This article quantifies some of the associated shifts in ecosystem structure and resource conditions, and predicts changes 40 yr into the future. The results should be of use in planning restoration of natural patterns and processes in these forests.
