Numerous studies on Human Body Models (HBMs) and Postmortem Human Subjects (PMHS) have identified the need to better characterize the factors that contribute to pelvic excursion and subsequent submarining, particularly in reclined seating scenarios in frontal vehicular crashes. Recent studies have focused on modeling the belt interaction with HBMs and PMHS or material characterization of adipose tissue, but none have utilized biomedical image data from living subjects to characterize the morphology and structure of the tissue local to the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS), a major point of interaction of the body and restraint system. Data are needed to inform the morphological validation of HBMs, but also potentially for the design of modification kits to existing Anthropometric Test Devices (ATDs) for use in the frontal vehicular crash environment or morphing functions currently used to modify body geometry in parametric models. Lebarbe et al. analyzed the morphology in the pelvic area using PMHS, however the study was limited to a small sample (nž4) and all subjects were categorized as obese (Lebarbé et al. 2020). Schick et al. analyzed morphology in a larger sample (nž114), however the study was similarly limited by the use of PMHS (Schick et al. 2021). Given the use of HBMs and ATDs to study the risks associated with submarining, such surrogate models would benefit from data characterizing subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) at ASIS across a more translatable population.
