The social behavior and cardiovascular response of fourth- and fifth-grade boys exhibiting coronary-prone, Type A, behavior or noncoronary-prone, Type B, behavior was investigated. The presence of coronary-prone behavior was assessed by the self-report form of the Matthews Youth Test for Health. After the boys had been classified as either Type A or Type B dyads were formed by pairing Type A with Type A boys, Type A with Type B boys, and Type B with Type B boys. Each dyad played a 20-trial game in which players had the opportunity either to compete or cooperate and the opportunity either to punish or to reward their opponent. During the game blood pressure and heart rate were measured periodically. The results of the investigation showed that AA dyads were more competitive, punitive, hostile, and impatient than Bb and AB dyads. A regression analysis suggested that coronary-prone status and hostility were most highly associated with systolic blood pressure during the game. The implication of results for intervention with children is discussed.
