What role does Samos play in Herodotus' narrative? Sometimes he shows the ‘warm sympathy’ that scholars have claimed, but more often Samian dysfunctionality is in point. Often events in Samos prepare for later episodes where Greek states offer more spirited, committed, or organised opposition to external threats; but the threat that they too might collapse into the Samian pattern is never far away. There are ways too in which Samos points forward to events beyond the end of Herodotus' text, especially the Samian defection from Athens in 440–39. It is difficult, though, to extract a single or simple moral from the Samian past for Herodotus' present; a series of conversations are reconstructed where very different conclusions could be drawn for events in the mid-430s and late-410s.
