1. INTRODUCTION. Daily life abounds with mechanical linkages. Examples include the joints of our bodies, the arms of industrial robots, the rotating pistons of a steam engine, and the deceitfully complex music stands used by orchestras all over the world (see [4]). In this article we examine one of these mechanisms in detail: the pentagon in the plane.
