Femtosecond lasers were used to cut an ultra-sharp V-notch on the Si3N4ceramic sample for fracture toughness testing. The molten zone on the V-notch surface ablated by femtosecond lasers was studied using SEM, EDS and Raman spectra. The thickness of the molten Si shell is about 2 μm, however, the thickness of the molten shell at the V-notch tip is very thin, and it can be easily etched with hydrofluoric acid. The fracture toughness value of the Si3N4sample with the molten Si shell is equal to that after etched. It is concluded that the molten zone on the V-notch surface have no influence on fracture toughness of liquid phase sintered Si3N4ceramics.
