The logarithm of stamina for each ofSardinops sagax(4 to 6 600 s),Scomber japonicus peruanus(16 to 27 000 s) andOdontestes regia(7 to 9 900 s), adjusted to a length of 10 cm, decreased linearly over swimming speeds of 31 to 82, 25 to 78 and 24 to 75 cm s-1, respectively (19°C). The regression coefficient was -0.064 for bothS. j. peruanusandO. regiaand -0.049 forS. sagax. Critical swimming speed (60 min, 5 cm s-1) forS. sagax(10cm), 32 cm s-1, is within the range found for other species of similar length. The suggestion of a change in regression coefficient as swimming speed increased from prolonged to burst (Brett, 1964) was not supported by the results of this study.
