Longitudinal data on changes in senior center partici- pation characteristics are analyzed for a nationally representative sample of 424 senior centers surveyed in 1982 and again in 1989. On average, participants are said to have become older with slightly higher incomes while declines in overall health and increases in number of frail participants are more likely to be reported than other trends. Minority participation appears to have remained flat or de- clined. Considerable variation is found fur the sample, however, and the data suggest trends generally attributed to senior centers in the 1980s were not as strong as has been suggested.
