THE anatomy of normal descent of the testis was described by John Hunter in 1786. He stated that he did not know the cause of failure of descent but was inclined to suspect that the fault originated in the testis itself. Since his day a vast amount has been written on the treatment of the undescended testis, but the anatomy of normal, in relation to partial and to non-descent, has been neglected. We still share John Hunter’s ignorance of some of the causes of failure of the testis to reach its low scrota1 position. This paper is based upon a study of the testicular anatomy of normal infants dying at, or shortly after, birth. With the knowledge derived from this source a comparison is made with the anatomy found in IOO successive operations for undescended testis. Some consideration is also given to the phenomenon of testicular torsion which is often associated with the abnormally placed organ.
