The pollen grain size of 15 specimens belonging to 8 species and forming a natural polyploid series was determined on permanent acetocarmine preparations. The pollen grain mean volumes of different Triticum species tend to grow with the increasing number of chromosomes 62: 10 [mu]3 for the diploid group, 96.10 [mu]3 for the tetraploid group (73.10 [mu]3 for T. timopheevi.), and 118.10 /[mu]3 for the hexaploid group. The volume of the pollen grain does not represent a corresponding multiple of the chromosome number: the reason for this disagreement lies apparently in the allopolyploidy of the polyploid series of the genus Triticum. The genetically different genomes A, B, D, and G probably exert a different effect on the pollen grain size. Genome B shows 62%, genome D 29%, and genome G 18% of the effect of genome A. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: 2. Sestak
