The respiratory (alveolar) region of the human lung has an extensive surface area, 150-180m2 (Weibel 1980), which is continually and directly exposed to the external environment, specifically to 10,000-20,000 1 of air inhaled daily. The thinness of the alveolocapillary membrane, though essential for the efficient diffusion of respiratory gases, reduces its effectiveness as a barrier to the absorption of other inhaled materials, including numerous, potentially pathogenic gases and particles, both viable (e.g., bacteria, viruses) and nonviable (e.g., chemical mists, fumes, dusts), commonly found in ambient air.
