Methods are described for estimating randomly distributed populations of attached algae (particularly diatoms) on stones, rock, and bryophytes. Periodic sampling over 4 years, and environmental factors, are described. The distribution and periodicity of the Achnanthes sp. group is given in detail; other species are also considered. Flow conditions are most important; high water levels reduce Achnanthes populations on the stones, and to a less extent on the rock; low water levels at first encourage population increases, but ultimately are adverse; epiphytic populations vary less than epilithic. A negative correlation, suggesting a grazing effect, was found with populations of the caddis larva Agapetus fuscipes. The overall distribution in the stream is affected by the washing-off of cells, and their subsequent deposition lower down. Growth in 1 stretch was prevented by a peaty deposit on the substratum.
