In further studies in Japan on acarine predator-prey systems [see RAE/A 65, 6660, etc.], a simulation model was constructed to elucidate the factors that determine the behaviour of such systems in a small continuous environment. The majority of the biological parameters in the model were obtained from data by A. Takafuji & D.A. Chant on the predator Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot and its prey Tetranychus pacificus Mcg. [see 65, 3176], and the results of simulations described well the interaction between these 2 species on a plant of lima bean [Phaseolus lunatus]. The simulation showed that 3 parameters (the predator's searching efficiency and tolerance of starvation, and the carrying capacity of the prey) determined the behaviour of the system. A persistent system resulted from much lower values of these 3 parameters than those that were obtained experimentally with the predator and its prey.
