An investigation was conducted to determine the occurrence and frequency of the temporomandibular joint syndrome, to relate the syndrome to characteristics of the occlusion, and to test the efficacy of occlusal adjustment. Symptoms were grouped into four categories. Of 269 subjects, 56 had such severe symptoms that they were regarded to be in need of treatment.The subjects exhibiting severe symptoms were treated by adjustment of the occlusion. The majority of symptoms were eliminated by means of selective grinding.
