It has been a great pleasure to guest edit this special issue of in vitro models that focusses on the achievements of members of the UK Organ-on-a-Chip Technologies Network and the keynote speakers who helped make our symposium series such a success (cpm. qmul. ac. uk/events/old). In chairing these symposia over the last few years and editing this special issue, some key themes have emerged. These themes represent current challenges and opportunities, and areas of intense investigation within the organ-on-a-chip field:1. A separation of the field according to two distinct objectives: one which seeks to develop regulatory tests which can be more accurate than the status quo and replace animal testing as a regulatory requirement, and another which seeks to develop tractable in vitro model systems which accurately recapitulate aspects of human physiology and pathophysiology for discovery science.
