Whole enamel samples were taken from 451 teeth and chemically analyzed for 30 trace elements. Results of these analyses were studied, adjusted statistically and related to dental caries by multiple linear regression analysis. Besides the expected age and sex effects, the 8 elements which had significantly large sample relationships to tooth decay were as follows: negative: F, Al, Fe, Se and Sr; positive: Mn, Cu and Cd. The elements F, Al, Mn, Cu, Sr and Cd were involved in curved or interactive effects. Significant effects for much smaller samples were: negative: B, K, Ni and Pb; positive: V, Zn and Rb.
