In The World of Cities, Orum and Chen offer a succinct statement on cities as places that is intended to be both comprehensive and accessible to urban sociology students. They begin by noting that cities are significant forces precisely because they are places,“that is, specific locations in space that provide an anchor and a meaning to who we are.” Indeed, it is this quality of cities, their placeness and our own sense of connection to places, that is one of the most fundamental, but least acknowledged, concepts in urban social science. The point is well taken. Some things in the social sciences are so obviously important that they are often left unsaid. Precisely because of this, however, their significance tends to be lost in academic discourse. Place is one of those factors, an elemental dimension of social structure and experience frequently overlooked in sophisticated sociological discussions. Even urban sociology, which focuses fundamentally on a placerelated theoretical object, often ignores this critical factor.
