Often the meaning of scientific concepts conflicts with an everyday perspective of events, and individuals (whether child or adult) encounter “critical barriers” in grasping them. Two dimensions contributing to the unobvious meaning of scientific concepts are the problem of scale and the nature of inference about events unobserved. These problems are especially apparent in the teaching of earth science ideas. For example, the flat earth perspective and the common perception of a minimally changing geologic environment, repeatedly pose obstacles to understanding frame of reference thinking and to perceiving the amount of change through geologic time. Children and adults struggle with similar problems as they attempt to progress in understanding the meaning of “unobvious” scientific conceptions.
