In Yoshihara’s treatment, mobility becomes the key dynamic, reshaping human nature, social organisation and places. We cannot give up propinquity and the longing for community and all its attendant comforts, joys and security, and yet are constantly pulled away by the opportunities as well as the demands of a hyper-mobile world. As the title implies, the Fluidity of Place has made it impossible for us to ignore the two contending forces: a world which is increasingly dominated by an aimless mobility and the counter drive to revalue locality and its promises.
